About

INTERCEDE aims to improve the value of Europe’s forests by identifying and promoting market-based solutions that incentivise forest owners to manage their land for the benefit of society.

These benefits, known as forest ecosystem services (FES), include essential services like climate change mitigation and water management, as well as recreational and cultural opportunities.

The objectives

The overall aim of INTERCEDE is to advance critical knowledge on how to design and implement market-based instruments that incentivise forest owners’ supply of valuable FES through integrated management measures securing the resilience of long-term supply under alternative futures, and to ensure its uptake and impact through targeted guidelines and decision support.

This can only be achieved by systematically connecting research to policy and practice, creating the multi-actor aligned Transdisciplinary Forum as key interface.

Target accelerated uptake and impact through close interaction with end-users

Provide decision support on supply and demand of FES to guide forest management and policy

Identify and assess the performance of current and emerging market-based approaches

Provide and accelerate uptake of guidelines on new MBI, policies and business models

Why do we need this project?

INTERCEDE tackles the growing challenge of managing Europe’s forest resources, which are increasingly impacted by climate change. By studying current trends and conducting economic evaluations, INTERCEDE is working for a better understanding of the supply and demand for forest ecosystem services (FES). It is mapping and assessing Europe’s Market-Based Instruments (MBI) to be able to develop flexible policies to improve forest management and create new, sustainable business models. These efforts will help forest owners earn more while benefiting society. Through collaboration and engaging with stakeholders across Europe, INTERCEDE connects research with real-world applications and tests new policies to make a positive impact.

INTERCEDE is funded by Horizon Europe (March 2024 – February 2029).
